The ice pits

The “nevère” are cylindrical stone constructions, two thirds of which are underground, with a cone-shaped roof covered with limestone slabs. In this karst environment, the “nevère” were filled with snow during the winter and served as a cool place to store milk in the summer before it was made into butter.

Monte Generoso has the highest concentration of ice pits in Switzerland, several of which can be seen along the path from the Monte Generoso summit to Orimento. Some particularly well preserved “nevère” have been restored on the Alp of Génor and are open to visitors.
